The Peer Leaders Initiative delivered 5000 sets of Peer Awareness Kits to over 50 primary and secondary schools in Singapore during the fourth quarter of 2023.

So… Tell me more about these awareness kits that I have to be aware of?

To help peer support leaders (PSLs) grade their peer support skills using a skill chart, these kits were specifically designed. The chart consists of eight different skills: Observation, Listening, Relationship, Communication, Critical Thinking, Self Care, Confidence and Self-Improvement. For the purpose of identifying their strengths and shortcomings, each peer leader will assign a score on a scale from one to 10.

Can you elaborate more on what each skill set means?

OBSERVATION

The ability to understand how other people are feeling and to notice when they are in emotional or mental pain.

LISTENING

Listen and empathize without judgement, demonstrating a sincere effort to understand the speaker’s thoughts.

RELATIONSHIP

The ability to build rapport with others in such a way that they feel safe sharing personal matters.

COMMUNICATION

Uses different styles and skills of communication to help people understand what you are saying.

CRITICAL THINKING

The ability to understand a situation and look at problems from different points of view to help their peers come up with better solutions.

SELF CARE

Knows how important self-care and managing stress are and practice them regularly to stay healthy while helping others.

CONFIDENCE

Acts in a way that shows a balance between self-confidence and being open to the ideas and thoughts of others.

SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Approach life and studies with a curious mindset and seizes opportunities to learn and grow.

A page with helpful suggestions for PSLs to follow and counsel for their fellow classmates on stress management was one of the kit's inclusions. In addition, a short note on cortisol was included for those interested in the science behind stress!

Okay, summarize what cortisol is in a sentence.

When under stress, the body releases cortisol, a "stress hormone" that can result in frequent illnesses or pimples.

Wow! Now I have a fun fact to share with my peers about stress!

With the help of emotional intelligence flashcards on the kit's final page, which they can cut out and give to a friend, PSLs can explore their creativity. PSLs have the option to personalize a note on the reverse of the cards to encourage or express their concern for their peers.

Cool stuff! Can I get some copies for myself and my peers too???

From this blog article, you can get the soft copy of the Peer Awareness Kit. Feel free to share them to help inspire more PSLs!
